Last week I saw Ruby Sparks, a super nice movie about a writer who creates a girlfriend by writing about her. He wrote a bestseller when he was nineteen but has a writersblock since. But then a girl comes up in his dreams and he’s starting to write about her. When she actually appears in his life he doesn’t really know what to do… A great movie for a quiet night on the couch!

Hello dear readers, sorry for the absence the last few days. I was busy doing various things like visiting my sister, watching the elections in Holland, having nice dinners with friends and visiting some great exhibitions. Last weekend was the last chance to take a look at the thirteen films Stanley Kubrick had directed. A must see in the Eye filmmuseum for everyone who enjoys film.

During my minor I had to see several movies, which included A Clockwork Orange from Stanley Kubrick. A lot of us had not seen the movie yet so we decided to watch it in a small college room on big screen. After all maybe not the greatest idea as the film had such an emotional impact on me that I got nauseous. As you can imagine I’ve never seen the film again but it left quite an impression as I’d never had that reaction to a film before.

I was under the impression that A Clockwork Orange was the only film I’ve ever seen of Kubrick and because the style of the film wasn’t really my kind of thing I never though about seeing his other movies. Though, walking through the exhibition it seemed that I’d seen some others as well, which I though was a bit odd as Kubrick made only thirteen films in his carriere (yes, only thirteen but all of them made an impact on the film industry. Quite impressive!). Nevertheless, I’d seen his last two films Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut on the telly. This is a little embarrassing to say but I used to think that Eyes Wide Shut was a Batman movie. Don’t know why actually.

Now that I realize most of his films aren’t like A Clockwork Orange I’d love to see the rest of them. Especially Lolita, as it was a super controversial film at the time. There were several letters from Christian organizations who wrote to Kubrick and asked to stop the production.

Unfortunately, the exhibition is over now but I though it was super interesting. I spend almost 3,5 hours wandering around, watching pieces from his movies and reading stories about his life.

There are several reasons why I think Moonrise Kingdom will be the best film of 2012 but let me start by telling you how I was introduced to Wes Anderson. Though he makes movies for quite a long time, I’ve only been introduced to him during my minor Visual Culture in 2009. We had to watch two films every week and got loads of tips from my teacher of films we should see in our own time. The Royal Tenenbaums was on that list. And the love for Wes Anderson was born. The perfect styling, beautiful shots, awesome soundtracks and quirky types made me a huge fan.

With me apparently a thousand other people as being a Wes Anderson fan suddenly made you a hipster. That his movies are too pretentious and hipsters are seeing all kind of meaning in his films while he’s using the same technique over and over again. I find such statements very annoying. And not true. I think all of his movies are wonderful in its own way and that it’s great to have such a personal and recognizable style. Besides that I’ve the feeling everyone is put as a stereotype hipster if you match one or more things of the so-called hipster culture. Which means everyone is a hipster these days, so why pretend it’s a bad thing?

So why this film? Well first of all: Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman. The cast includes so many great names, I’m so curious of the great awesomeness we’re about to see on screen. The last film I saw with Tilda Swinton was kind of depressing so it was a nice surprise to see her in the trailer. And of course Bill Murray, he’s always genius in every Wes Anderson film. I’d have to say I miss Owen Wilson…

And ofcourse, the girl!! Her hair, the styling, the make up, she looks amazing. Yes, I’m already looking for a pink dress with a white collar (can’t find it unfortunately) and some knee socks. I love the sixties style and her style in particular is just amazing. Can’t say anything else about it. Please let me know if you find such a dress.
